The Honorable Christine Todd Whitman

Governor

State of New Jersey

May 7, 1998

Dear Governor Whitman,

We, of the Azerbaijan Society of America would like to commend your fine works for our beautiful state of New Jersey.

As residents of this great state, we would also like to be acknowledged as being part of the history and community of New Jersey.

Therefore, we would welcome your proclamation of the 80th year anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Azerbaijan as May 28 1998. As you know, Azerbaijan became the first Muslim democratic republic in the world on May 28, 1918. After many long and tortured years under the Soviet regime, it has again freed itself to become a secular and democratic nation tied to the western world.

Your proclamation would be gratefully acknowledged by the Azeri people, as a bridge of unity in our common wish for peace, prosperity and happiness. We, as Azeri-Americans would be honored if you would celebrate our independence day with us and pray for the brotherhood of all nations upon earth.

Respectfully,

Ms. Tomris Azeri

President
